The Phoenix Story
Where It All Began
Phoenix Football was born from a simple belief: every girl deserves the opportunity to reach her full potential in football.
In 2022, local coach Ciaran Alexander was running a successful futsal programme in Wixams, Bedfordshire, when he reconnected with an old school friend, Carl Perri. Carl brought his daughter along to a session and quickly became involved, helping to coach and support the growing programme.
As more local girls joined, it became clear they could more than match the boys in ability, commitment and passion. That summer, several girls from the programme attended trials for local Emerging Talent Centres. Despite their talent, none were selected.
Rather than seeing this as a setback, Carl saw an opportunity.
Together with Ciaran and local coach Michael Taylor, an ambitious idea was formed: create a girls’ team that would compete in a boys’ league to accelerate development and provide the highest level of challenge possible. Phoenix Football was established!
Breaking New Ground
From day one, Phoenix Football’s mission was clear: to develop girls to their maximum potential, regardless of the obstacles.
The idea was innovative, but it was not without scepticism. Initial attendance at training was just four players, and as no all-girls team had ever competed in the 75-year history of the Bedfordshire & Chiltern Youth League, many questioned whether the girls would be competitive enough.
While much of the feedback was well-intentioned, it highlighted the challenges and unconscious biases that still exist within the game. Equality in football remains an ongoing journey, and Phoenix Football continues to champion opportunities for girls at every level.
Undeterred, the coaching team spent the summer recruiting and training at Kempston Addison Park. Even one week before the start of the season, the club did not have enough players to field a team.
Yet the team persevered.
A Historic First Season
Soon after, local company GI Scaffolding became the club’s first sponsor, helping provide the team’s iconic gold Nike kit.
The new kit gave the players a sense of identity, belonging and pride.
The first half of the season brought valuable lessons. Competing against boys required the girls to adapt to a faster, more physical and direct style of football. Every challenge became an opportunity to learn and improve.
By Christmas, those lessons began to pay off.
The team embarked on an incredible unbeaten run that continued through to the end of the season. On the final day, Phoenix Girls were crowned league champions and also reached the League Cup Final.
What had started as a bold experiment had become one of the most inspiring stories in grassroots football.
National Recognition
The team’s achievements attracted significant media attention.
Phoenix Girls featured in national newspapers and received coverage from the BBC and ITV. Their story even reached international audiences, with a radio station in New Zealand sharing their remarkable journey.

Phoenix players have been invited and represented the club in two seperate UEFA adverts promoting the female game!
At summer tournaments, the girls were regularly recognised by players and parents alike as “the team from the TV.”
More importantly, they became role models.
They showed other girls what was possible when given the opportunity to compete, develop and believe in themselves.
The impact extended beyond team success. That summer, five players progressed to MK Dons Academy, while several others gained places within Emerging Talent Centres and represented Bedfordshire County.
The original vision was becoming reality.
Raising the Standard
The success of the first season transformed interest in the club.
For the 2024/25 season, Phoenix Girls entered both the girls’ league on Saturdays and a higher-level Division 3 boys’ league on Sundays. Darren Kaye joined the coaching team, bringing further experience and expertise.
The season proved extraordinary.
Phoenix Girls completed an unbeaten campaign in girls’ football, winning the league title, League Cup and County Cup to secure a historic treble.
Meanwhile, the Sunday fixtures against boys continued to provide the ultimate development environment. The girls regularly faced bigger, faster and stronger opponents. Results were not always favourable, but the coaching team remained committed to their philosophy.
They refused to compromise.
Every week, the players were encouraged to play brave, possession-based football, focusing on long-term development over short-term results.
Those experiences became the foundation of their success.
The technical quality, resilience and confidence developed on Sundays consistently translated into outstanding performances on Saturdays.
Building Character Through Challenge
With success came increased attention.
Some questioned whether Phoenix Girls should be allowed to compete in local girls’ leagues, incorrectly assuming the club had simply cherry-picked the area’s best players.
The reality was very different.
Many of the players had joined from lower divisions and were considered development players when they arrived. Their progress was earned through hard work, dedication and a willingness to challenge themselves every week against boys’ teams.
The players trained in less-than-ideal conditions, on a bumpy rugby pitch due to limited access to local 3G facilities. Yet they embraced every challenge.
The coaches, players and parents understood that growth rarely happens inside a comfort zone.
The girls’ success was not built on shortcuts. It was built on commitment, resilience and a shared belief in what they could achieve together.
The Recent Season
During the 2025/26 season, Phoenix Football continued its growth, creating even more opportunities for local girls to develop and excel.
A new U14 team was introduced and immediately made its mark, competing in the top division and securing an impressive 4th-place finish in a highly competitive league, demonstrating both its quality and potential.
The U15 team enjoyed a memorable campaign, crowned Bedfordshire County Cup Champions after an outstanding season of hard work and commitment.
Meanwhile, the U16 squad, made up predominantly of U15 players playing above their age group, achieved remarkable success by winning the U16 Premier Division title and lifting the League Cup, showcasing the strength of the club’s development pathway.
To further enhance the player experience and support long-term development, Phoenix Football also welcomed a professional fitness coach to the programme and introduced futsal as a key part of its training philosophy, helping players improve their technical ability, decision-making and confidence on the ball.
Continuing to Inspire
In the summer of 2025, following their treble-winning season, Phoenix Girls represented Bedfordshire at the National Finals.
Competing against some of the strongest teams in the country, they won their group and once again demonstrated the quality of both the players and the development pathway created by the club.
Today, Phoenix Football boasts a large and experienced coaching team, all united by a passion for girls’ football and player development.
The academy-style environment places equal importance on player progression, personal growth and enjoyment of the game.
To date, seven players have progressed into professional academy environments — an achievement of which everyone involved with the club is incredibly proud.
Looking Ahead
As we move into the 2026/27 season, Phoenix Football continues to grow.
Plans are in place to field teams at U10, U14, U15, U16 and U16 Junior Premier League level, alongside the launch of our first-ever Phoenix Women team.
This will create a complete pathway for local girls, allowing them to develop from youth football all the way through to the adult game within the same club environment.
The club has also secured long-term partnerships with Capital Arches Group and McDonald’s, providing the support and sustainability needed to continue building for the future.
Our vision is ambitious: to create a leading female football club built by local girls, for local girls.
We believe that vision is achievable.
With talented players, dedicated coaches, committed volunteers and supportive families, the future of Phoenix Football is brighter than ever.
